Press Statement from Waterford City & County Council
Heritage Officer Bernadette Guest.
Throughout the Decade of Centenaries Waterford Commemorations Committee has strongly supported the deeper exploration of the people and events in Waterford between 1916 and 1923 through its funding programme for publications and docu-films. The Commemorations Committee were delighted to support this high quality production by John Foley exploring the determination of Liam Lynch and ultimately his demise leading to suspension of operations, a ceasefire and the end of the Civil War. Heritage Officer Bernadette Guest commented; “This docu-film evocatively captures the principles and ideals of those who fought for and against the treaty and the ordinary people whose lives and homes became intertwined in the activity around the Kockmealdown and Comeragh Mountains.

The film weaves the national and local historical context provided by the excellent Gerard Shannon and Michael Desmond with vivid re-enactments and accounts by family descendants of the safe houses and businesses used by Liam Lynch and the IRA in March-April 1923 and along with superb acting, beautiful lighting and landscape imagery audiences cannot but be impressed as they are transported back to a century ago and the tensions and uncertainty of the foundation of the State. John has produced an excellent piece of film and we look forward to public reaction as it is screened across the country in 2023 in tandem with centenary commemorations of the end of the Civil War.”
