Letter to Miss Weaver film is a short poetry film. It is based on a period in Lucia Joyce’s life (daughter of James Joyce) where she was incarcerated in St Andrew’s Psychiatric Hospital, Northampton (UK). She was there as a patient and writes to Miss Harriet
Weaver (her guardian) asking her to bring her to Ireland. It is a creative account as all documents about Lucia Joyce were destroyed.
The film is five and a half minutes duration.
The film was written and directed by Ger Duffy. Ger lives in Co Waterford. She has written poetry, drama and screenwriting. She holds a PGDip in Creative Writing from Goldsmiths College and an MA in Screenwriting. She was winner of the Second Wave Playwriting Award, the Desmond O’Grady International Poetry Award and the Redline Poetry Award. Her fiction and poetry are widely published.
John Foley was the producer and director of photography. John has produced and directed a number of historical documentaries in recent years. The Aftermath was a feature documentary based on the War Of Independence and the Civil War in Waterford. In more recent times John has been involved in a number of short films. John holds a Higher Diploma in Television Production and won The Student Media Award for best television programme in the Irish language in 2020.
Louise Barry played the role of Lucia Joyce. Louise is a musician, actor, and voice artist based in Ireland with a creative practice that bridges sound, performance, and storytelling. Trained in music and dance with a deep sensitivity to mood and tone, she brings a unique presence to both her compositions and her on-screen and voiceover work. Louise’s artistic interests lie in emotionally driven, character-focused narratives — whether expressed through music or performance. Her work often explores themes of memory, intimacy, and internal landscapes, with a quiet intensity that resonates across disciplines.
The Cast and Crew spent a day filming in Annestown House on the Waterford Coast in April 2025.
